“When someone says you can’t do it, do it twice and take pictures”. – Unknown
To the untrained eye this is just a family photo in front of the Sydney Opera House. To me, its on of “THE” pictures …
You know, the ones you take to show everyone who said “you can’t”.
“You can’t have that baby, it will ruin your life”… and now that baby is 18 years old and my best friend.
“You can’t just up and move from California to Australia”. I’m a dual citizen and have lived in Sydney for a decade.
“You’ll never have all of your kids together on one continent”. And yet here we all are.
“You’ll never get anywhere without an education”. And yet I’m content and fulfilled in the career path I’ve chosen!
“You’ll never break free from addiction”. Clean for 16 years
“You’ll never find a guy to take you on with your million kids”. Umm.. that guy took this photo!
Blah blah blah the “can’t s ” just keep coming and eventually they become so engrained in our diet of what we hear from others that we may even fill in the void with our own version of doubt and self sabotage.
At some point you have got to decide.. what kind of life do you want to live??
I never cared if my life fit into the narrative designed for me by the same individuals who continued to tell me what I could and couldn’t do. I’ve always done what I thought was right for me ( and of course the little people in my life who matter the most). I have worked consistently to gets me closer to my definition of happiness, not to be confused with anyone else’s.
Happiness isn’t one size fits all, neither is success. Not everyones version of fulfilment is the same.
Over time my dreams have evolved, my goals have shifted and I’ve had to adjust my life course accordingly.. it hasn’t always earned me popularity.. but I can tell you one thing.. I don’t have any regrets!!
I a beyond excited to see where I “can’t ” go next!!
Where are you headed? who are you listening to? whose taking the lead on your life course?
